| The start of 31st season saw Wessex Pilgrims take on Highcliffe on a warmish blustery day at Wingfields. Rendy won the toss and decided to bat first. Not much can be said about the batting except well done to Sean Damen who top scored with a personnel best of 23, and welcome back to Simon Jones who last played in 1988. As our innings finished early we went straight back out in the field before tea. After 6 overs things looked grim for the Pilgrims as Highcliffe raced to 40 for no wicket. But with some inspiration fielding by 10 year old Brandon Jones who i think could be one of the youngest players for the Pilgrims and a change of bowling the Pilgrims charge began. Paul Harding and Nicky Birt were the first change bowlers and soon got into the Highcliffe batsmen who lost 5 quick wickets before tea. You know how at the end of each season you look back at any special moments that change a game for you, well, we did not have to wait long for a stunning single one handed catch diving (yes diving) to his right by Jocky Wilson certainly changed the outcome of this game as with great fielding by all we went on to a narrow exiting 4 run victory. Paul H best of the bowling with 4-21 which included 10 of his last over and one dropped catch( by him)!!!!!. Whilst at the other end behind the stumps Jamie was practicing his formation flying with his attempts to stump the opening batsmen on a number of occasions. And trying to hard by dropping a catch of Paul's bowling. Never mind they both have the excuse of being experienced players !!!!! Again well done to Brandon and lets look forward to next week at Hyde. |
