For the last game of the season we were at the
picturesque village of Beaulieu Rendy won the toss and elected to
bat first. With Matty still on his way from football and Lawrence
finishing his Triathlon it was Paul Harding turn to open the bat with
Nick. Nick took first strike and on the second ball of the day straight
drove the bowler for six. Well what can I say but we rode our chances
and put on 100 in fairly quick time with both Nick and Paul giving the
odd chance or three. The first wicket fell on 135 and what a catch it
was to dismiss Paul who had scored 39.Lawrence came in at number 3 and
in no time had raced along to 23 before also being caught at extra cover
with the score on 172. Matty joined Nick at the crease and also struck a
6 with his first scoring shot. Meanwhile at the other end Nick had
passed his 50 and before no time at all brought up his second ton for
Pilgrims, both scored this season. Over the next half an hour the run
rate raced along before Nick finally missed timed a pull shot and was
out with the score on 235, a fine knock of 135 his highest ever score in
cricket. Matty continued to score quickly and in no time had reached his
50. Tim Gritt had been in and out at the other end scoring 6 runs. This
brought Club Chairman Dave Sandham to the crease with just a few minutes
left but like Nick and Matty Dave too struck a six on the last ball of
the innings to remain 6 not out and at the other end Matty carried his
bat for a quick fire 62. After tea with a coach load of Swedish students
it was Beaulieu's turn to bat and in no time were 40-3 with Rendy taking
the first two wickets and Jamie with a fine opening spell of 6 overs for
just 15 runs. Jockey also took 2 wickets in his spell and with Sean,
Nick and Paul H having no luck with the ball the last over of the season
was left to Lawrence who made us feel somewhat mortified as he took 2
wickets for just 3 runs and had Matty had dived thirty yards to his left
and taken a catch maybe Lawrence would have had a hatrick or that's what
he kept telling us at the end !!!!!.
Anyway so ended another season for the
pilgrims in fact the 29th to be exact and all credit must go to Dave for
initially forming the club back in the 70's and also for organizing such
a great fixture list over the last 29 years. Another huge thanks to
Rendy who this season especially had a nightmare time trying to get 11
players each week because of injury's etc. Thanks must also go to Ted,
Harry and Lou all have done their fair share of scoring this season. Unfortunately
Jamie Gawler will not be playing next season and all at the club wish
him well whilst training to be a "Top Gun Pilot". Thanks to
Dave again for all the umpiring stints this year.
Finally the Club would like to wish fellow
Pilgrim Alan Damen a speedy recovery and hope that he is back playing
again with us next season.
