Jamie's
demolition at the death
It was again another fine Sunday when we turned
up at Ashurst to play. Only to find no one there and no trace of their
pitch ever being used this season. Quick thinking by Dave Sandham and a
trip back into the pub enlightened us on the fact that Ashurst were now
playing at Lyndhurst's cricket ground this season. Sure enough
when we arrived at the ground the opposition were waiting for us.Rendy won
the toss and elected to bat on a lovely batting track. Matty and Jamie
opened the batting where Jamie was dismissed first for 9 runs. Matty and
Geoff built a good partnership of 64 before Matty (44) was caught
behind. Malc was next to go for 3 with the score on 84-3. Geoff and Nick
put on 27 before Geoff was caught in the deep for a very good 45 runs.
Nick(12) and Rendy 28) were both run out as a result of direct hits on
the stumps. We were now 144 for 6 and ended up with no-one else
troubling the scorecard and a total of 153
all out. I hope Graham Corbin reads the above as he spent the entire
innings nursing a hangover sleeping under a tree, but did give us all a
laugh as he tried to don his cricket gear when asked to bat. ( lucky it
was not 20/20cricket). Wessex Pilgrims took to the field after tea
knowing that it was going to be a difficult task to stop the opposition
from getting the runs as the outfield was very quick and 153 was not
really a good total. At 4-2 thoughts were changing as Jamie collected
two early wickets.33-3 was even better but Ashurst started to dig in and
chase the target. Some hard hitting from their 4,5 and 6 batsmen set
them well on the way to and at one stage only needed 5 runs an over, but
some tight bowling from Nicky 8-1-28-2 ( 11 of last over) pegged them
back and they needed 22 to win with 4 wickets left from the last 2
overs. Into the action again came Jamie Gawler who with a display of
some of the Quickest bowling I have seen for some time obliterated their
last 4 batsmen which included a Hatrick
without conceding a run and win us the game with 8 runs to spare.
On a special note the club wishes to send
its best wishes and a speedy recovery to Al Damen who had been involved
in a motor accident last week.
